Q&A: Our Wedding at the Water’s Edge
There’s something magical about celebrating love where nature and culture meet. For this couple, their lakeside wedding in Malawi wasn’t just about vows at the water’s edge—it was a vibrant tapestry woven with Indian traditions, music, and colour.
We sat down with them for a Q&A to hear about their unforgettable day.
Why did you choose that venue as your wedding destination?
“We wanted a place that felt serene but also alive with beauty. The lake gave us a sense of calm, and we loved the idea of exchanging vows with waves as our background. It felt like a blessing straight from nature.”
How did you incorporate Indian culture into your wedding?
“Our celebration was filled with traditional touches—from colourful mehndi designs on my hands, to the vibrant lehenga and sherwani outfits, to dancing under fairy lights with Bollywood beats. We also made sure our décor reflected Indian style, with bold fabrics, lanterns, and floral garlands.”
What was your favourite moment of the day?
“The first dance. Wearing our traditional outfits, surrounded by family cheering us on, and hearing the mix of Indian drums and Malawian songs—it felt like two worlds blending into one. It’s a memory we’ll treasure forever.”
Did you have a special pre-wedding ritual?
“Yes, we had a haldi ceremony by the water! It was so much fun and symbolic—family applying turmeric paste under the Malawian sun while laughing together. It was a reminder of the joy and blessings that surround marriage.”
How did your guests experience the fusion of cultures?
“They absolutely loved it! Some of our Malawian friends joined in the garba dance, while our Indian family enjoyed the lakeside setting and Malawian seafood. It felt like everyone was part of both worlds.”
What challenges came with planning a cross-cultural wedding by the water?
“We had to think about logistics—like setting up stages, sound systems, and ensuring fabrics and décor could withstand the lakeside breeze. But working with local vendors who were open to Indian traditions made it smooth.”
Any advice for other couples planning a cultural wedding in Malawi?
“Don’t be afraid to mix traditions! Embrace both sides—wear the clothes, play the music, eat the food. A lakeside wedding already gives you a romantic canvas; adding your culture makes it deeply personal. Also, plan for a little flexibility—nature and culture both have their surprises.”
If you could describe your wedding in three words, what would they be?
“Colourful, soulful, unforgettable.”
This wedding at Lake Malawi proves that when love, tradition, and nature come together, the result is pure magic. Whether you’re dreaming of a cultural fusion celebration or a serene lakeside “I do,” the water’s edge is always waiting to tell your love story
